Faculty FeatureNew Venture to Fuel Global Thought
Global Research Institute director Peter Coclanis shares his ideas regarding a new global initiative to be launched March 22, 2010.
Question: The Global Research Institute is one of UNC-Chapel Hill's newest international initiatives. At
the Institute, UNC-CH faculty members and external scholars will
conduct and disseminate research on key global issues. Leading the
institute is Dr. Peter Coclanis, Albert R. Newsome DistinguishedProfessor of History at UNC. In a recent interview, Coclanis discussed
his expectations for the Global Research Institute and explained how it
would contribute to solving international issues, and, in so doing,
boost the university's international reputation.
Coclanis:
The Global Research Institute is an applied think tank dealing with
very important global issues. We have a huge number of important,
seemingly intractable problems out there in the world today - many of
which don't lend themselves to easy disciplinary solutions. What we are
hoping to do at the Institute is to deal with a number of these
problems over time, using some of our own faculty strength and the
expertise of very distinguished external scholars, whom we will fund to
bring to UNC. These scholars will work not only on their own research
but also as a group or cohort to try to find solutions for - or at
least innovative approaches to - some of these big problems. We want to
be part of the international dialogue on some of the issues that will
be really important in the coming decades.
Question: Internationalizing
the university was a major focus of the Global Leadership Circle, a
committee of faculty, administrators, alumni and friends convened by
former chancellor James Moeser to help the university develop a
strategy to expand its global presence. To do so, the committee
compared UNC-Chapel Hill to other internationally prominent
universities and their research institutes. The Global Research
Institute has an internal advisory board comprised of faculty members
and administrators concerned with the institute's themes and research,
and an external advisory board charged with strategizing, developing
networks, and rendering the Global Research Institute more visible.
Coclanis:
What we are trying to do with the Institute is to maximize some of
UNC's comparative advantages by creating an institutional framework
that would help us remedy what Chancellor Moeser's Global Leadership
Circle identified as weaknesses in our international posture. One of
the key weaknesses identified was a relative dearth, in comparison to
the very best universities, of what we would call "relative numbers" in
some international fields. We don't have as many internationally
oriented faculty in some fields as other elite universities which
began internationalizing earlier than we did. And the external/internal
approach is designed in part to help to meet this problem. Over time,
we hope that some of the external scholars who spend time with us will
like what they see, find UNC conducive to their research, and join us
in our work at Chapel Hill.
