Research activities

I am an epidemiologist whose main area of research is injury prevention. The area of injury epidemiology is understudied by epidemiologists relative to the public health significance, health care costs, and preventability of these health outcomes.

My appointment is joint between the Departments of Epidemiology and Orthopedics and Exercise and Sport Science. I also work closely with the Injury Prevention Research Center.

My areas of research focus, within injury epidemiology, are sports medicine, occupational injury, and violence. I also have a strong secondary interest in biostatistics and epidemiologic data analysis.

My research has covered risk factors for injury to the Anterior Cruciate Ligament (with Dr. Darin Padua), baseball injuries (with Dr Fred Mueller), deaths from violence (with Kay Sanford), prevention and management of concussions (with Dr Kevin Guskiewicz), occupational homicide (with Dr Dana Loomis), fire and burn related injury (with Drs Carol Runyan and Anna Waller).

Injuries are an enormous source of mortality and morbidity in the USA and globally. Research is urgently needed to help us learn how to address this pressing epidemic.
