Gillings gift accelerates public health solutions

 Innovation Lab principal investigator Will Vizuete displays a portable pollution chamber The UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health received a $50 million gift from Dennis Gillings and Joan Gillings, providing our School with critical resources to anticipate emerging public health challenges, accelerate solutions, and improve people's lives across North Carolina and around the world. Innovation Labs focus on solving big public health problems such as lack of access to clean water and health care, epidemics around the world and obesity. Funds from the gift also support leadership (including visiting professors), students and strategic investments.
Accelerating sustainable solutions through innovation laboratories
As competitively-selected funded research, teaching and practice projects, Gillings Innovation Labs strive to achieve fundamental breakthroughs -- solving important problems in public health.
Promoting change through leadership and engagement
Gillings Visiting Professors and executives in residence promote leadership and develop leaders. They may be faculty from the School or experts from other institutions.

To help develop the next generation of public health leaders, the gift supports students through scholarships, awards and curricular innovations, in addition to opportunities to participate in other initiatives such as innovation labs and to interact with visiting professors and executives in residence.
Extending impact through strategic investments
Strategic investments to extend leadership or address important needs are smart investments. Examples include support for the Water Institute at UNC and targeted support of the School's strategic initiatives.
