![]() Leah Devlin, DDS, MPH, a Gilling Visiting Professor, chats with a student. Leaders inspire and challenge. Results from the first Gillings Visiting Professors inspired expansion to executives in residence and, potentially, sponsored visiting professorships. With this expanded portfolio of leaders, the School is able to seize opportunities and create solutions to enrich public health and the School's effectiveness. Gillings Visiting Professors may be faculty from the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health or experts from outside the School who are invited or competitively selected from think tanks, businesses, nonprofit organizations or other academic institutions. In both cases, their assignments have a focused scope of work and attempt to solve an important public health problem. A new round of competitively selected GVPs is not anticipated in the near term, but ideas are always welcome.
![]() Sheila Leatherman, MSW, a Gillings Visiting Professor, with students from the Gillings School of Global Public Health Executives in residence complement and strengthen the School by bringing experiences and points of view that are not traditionally available in schools of public health. Most will have founded or led significant organizations, either for-profit or not-for-profit. Many will be entrepreneurs. Their value includes expertise in planning for sustainability of programs and connections to new groups of public health funders and supporters. In comparison with visiting professors and professors of the practice, who are usually half-time to full-time in the special assignment, executives in residence will tend to be more part-time.
The School anticipates and will pursue additional leadership support, such as visiting professors sponsored by foundations or companies to tackle problems of mutual interest to the School and the sponsor.
