Student Life As one of the leading biostatistics departments in the nation, we prepare students to apply quantitative skills to a wide variety of fields related to human health. We achieve this goal through classroom instruction in statistical theory and through innovative practical training opportunities at UNC and beyond. The success of the program is evident through its large and loyal alumni base, who currently occupy important positions in pharmaceutical companies, academic institutions, biotech firms, and government agencies. Chapel Hill, the home of the nation's oldest public university, has consistently been recognized as an ideal place to live and learn. Recently, the A&E television network honored Chapel Hill in their Top Ten Cities to Have it All. Previous honors range from Money magazine's selection of the Triangle (Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill) as the "#1 Best Place to Live in America" to Fortune magazine's rating of the Triangle as the "#1 Best City for Knowledge Workers." Biostatistics Student Association The
Biostatistics Student Association is a student run organization for all undergraduate and graduate students in
the Department of Biostatistics in the School of Public Health at the University
of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. We seek to encourage interaction outside of the
classroom through volunteer, social, and educational activities and create a
stronger community within the Biostatistics department and the School of Public
Health. Faculty Life The faculty members play a prominent role in biostatistics methodologic research; faculty are very active in biostatistical consulting and in collaborative research, including having leadership roles in several large multidisciplinary applied research projects. Important activities in health applications are implemented through such departmentally-related entities as the Collaborative Studies Coordinating Center, the Survey Research Unit, the Biostatistics Consulting Laboratory, and through university-wide research centers such as the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Genetics Center, the Center for Heath Promotion and Disease Prevention, the Carolina Population Center and the newly established Center for Environmental Health and Susceptibility. BiosRhythms is an annual newsletter about the Biostatistics Department's alumni, faculty, staff, students, and events. Faculty, staff, and students serve on several committees within the department. |
