The University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill  established the Center for Innovative Clinical Trials (CICT) July 1, 2007.  Clinical trials are controlled studies that test the relative benefits of various treatments, such as drugs,  surgery, or interventions in human beings.  The CICT is  led by Dr. Joseph G. Ibrahim, Alumni Distinguished Professor of Biostatistics in the Department of Biostatistics and Director of the Biostatistics Core at the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center (LCCC). The CICT has an interdisciplinary focus and theme, in which faculty from several departments at UNC and other institutions,  as well as collaborators from industry engage in both  methodologic and applied research in clinical trials design, analysis, and evaluation. 

The main mission of the CICT is to develop, as well as integrate, methodologic and applied  research for the design and analysis of clinical trials. By building on UNC's reputation and  excellence in translational research, one of the primary goals of the CICT is to advance  statistical science in clinical trials and quickly move it forward into clinical and statistical  practice. One of the unique strengths of the CICT and UNC in general, is the ability to nicely balance  methodological and collaborative research in clinical trials by building highly interdisciplinary and integrated research teams that  are capable of producing  new methodology and putting it into clinical and statistical practice. Our goal is to become globally recognized as the premier leader in  research  regarding all aspects of clinical trials.
