ENTP logoAn Enhanced Nurse Training Program Course

 

Overview

The Family Planning Nursing course consists of 18 hours of instruction in three teleclasses over a six- week period, coupled with clinical experiences. It will be followed by a six-month clinical practicum.

Prerequisites

Women's Health Core Course and Physical Assessment of Adults, plus at least one year of public health experience in a family planning setting.

Objectives

At the conclusion of the Family Planning Nursing track the student will be able to:

  • Obtain a contraceptive history for new and continuing family planning patients
  • Describe the method of action, efficacy, relative and absolute contraindications and side effects of all common methods of contraception.
  • Describe non-contraceptive benefits of various family planning methods.
  • Match appropriate method choices to individual women based on their physical and psychosocial profiles.
  • Work with other health care providers to maximize efficiency and effectiveness in patient care.
  • Articulate the responsibilities of the enhanced role nurse and negotiate for the realization of the role in the home agency.
  • Integrate the Women’s Health Training Core Course into the family planning encounter.


Course Requirements

Course Requirements (for all Women's Health Series courses):

  • Attendance at ALL sessions
  • Completion of pretest
  • Completion of all assignments by due date
  • A score of 80% or higher on the final examination
  • Completion of clinical practicum within six months

Those failing to complete the clinical practicum within six months must pay an extension fee of $100, retake the final exam and begin the practicum again.

Credits

Nursing contact hours will be awarded for this course.

Continuing education credit will be provided through Public Health Nursing and Professional Development (PHNPD) in the Local Technical Assistance and Training Branch of the Division of Public Health, Department of Health and Human Services. PHNPD is an Approved Provider of continuing nursing education by the North Carolina Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation.

The Office of Public Health Nursing and Professional Development qualifies as an acceptable provider of continuing education as defined by the NC Board of Nursing for the Continuing Competence process for RN license renewal.

Application and Registration

To register, you must submit BOTH a course registration and an Application for PHN Enrollment in the Enhanced Nurse Training Program in order to verify that you have completed the necessary prerequisites. The application must be signed by the student and her/his supervisor. To receive an original application form, send e-mail to oce@unc.edu or call 919-966-4032. Or you may view the form online, then print it out and complete it. Send the application to the Office of Continuing Education at the address below.
