Training In Population Statistics at The University of North Carolina

The Department of Biostatistics Population Statistics (Demography) training program is designed to provide pre and post doctoral research training in the application of statistical theory and methods in the population field. The goal is to train biostatisticians to conduct state of the art biostatistical research relevant to important population problems including health of human population and to provide high level consulting for others in the population field.

The demography-training program in the Department of Biostatistics has received continuous financial support through a training grant from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) since 1972. The training grant was renewed for a period of five years on May 1, 2003. Dr. C. M. Suchindran, Professor of Biostatistics serves as the training director of the program. Members of the training faculty work closely with the researchers at the Carolina Population Research Center and with Biostatistics division of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences.

The demography research and training program in the Department of Biostatistics is unique among the programs in training statisticians in population. A typical predoctoral trainee in the program takes, in addition to the biostatistics theory and methods courses, three courses covering demographic techniques and modeling in the Department of Biostatistics. In addition, trainees take courses outside the department to gain knowledge in the substantive area pertaining to human population.
