Biostatistics

Biostatistics is the science of obtaining, analyzing and interpreting data in order to understand and improve human health.  The mission of the Department of Biostatistics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is to forge advances in science that benefit human health through profound and paradigm-shifting innovations in biostatistical methodology and theory as well as the thoughtful implementation of biostatistical methods in practice. ATTENTION ALUMNI! 

Please join the Departments of Biostatistics and Statistics and Operations Research for its annual Alumni Reception held during the Joint Statistical Meetings in Denver Colorado this year.  The reception is listed in the on line program, but the details are as follows.  The reception will be held on Monday, August 4th from 5:30pm to 7pm at the Hyatt Regency Denver in HY-Capitol Ballroom 7.  If you have any questions, please contact Melissa Hobgood at 919-966-7256. CSCC Registry 

In the first half of 2008, the Collaborative Studies Coordinating Center was awarded two nation-wide patient registries which aim to dramatically simplify the gathering of patient data, among other benefits.  Maintaining registries is new to the Center, so these opportunities provide a chance to develop fresh data harvesting and management techniques.  "We are very excited to add registry study design and coordination to the repertoire of CSCC capabilities," says Center Director, Dr. Lisa LaVange.(continued)

Zeng Wins ASA Young Scholar Award

Donglin Zeng, PhD, associate professor in the Department of Biostatistics, has won the American Statistical Association's Gottfried E. Noether Young Scholar Award, established in 1999 to recognize distinguished researchers and teachers and to support research in nonparametric statistics (continued).

Wright Mentioned in Newsweek  Article

Fred Wright, Professor in Biostatistics, was mentioned in the July 12th edition of Newsweek.  The article, "Lies, Damned Lies, and..." also features former professor Michael Schell. Written by Sharon Begley, it spotlights statistical analysis and the invention of new tools such as the "false discovery rate." Please see here for complete article.

IMS Collections Publishes Volume in Honor of Dr. Sen  

The first issue of the new Institute of Mathematical Statistics (IMS) Collections series has been published. Volume 1 in the series, Beyond Parametrics in Interdisciplinary Research: Festschrift in Honor of Professor Pranab K. Sen, is edited by N. Balakrishnan, Edsel Pena, and Mervyn J. Silvapulle.  (continued).

NISS Board of Trustees Named for 2008-09 Fiscal Year

The National Institute of Statistical Sciences (NISS) announced its Board of Trustees members for the Fiscal 2008-2009 year. The Board approved the new members unanimously. Members of the board serve three-year terms (continued).
