The faculty members of the Department of Biostatistics collaborate with the faculties of the UNC Nursing School in conducting several areas of nursing research. Within the School of Nursing, the Research Support Center provides statistical consultation and support for proposed and existing research projects. Research includes studies of the relationship of fatigue and depression in men with HIV infection, the efficacy of an HIV self-care and symptom management intervention for low-income African American mothers with HIV infection, and sleep and daytime sleepiness in children with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. The Center on Chronic Illness supports and enhances research studies in the generation and dissemination of knowledge about preventing and managing chronic illness in vulnerable people. Faculty from the Department of Biostatistics are also involved in several other studies such as a longitudinal study of developmental and health outcomes of high-risk premature infants, a study of childhood development of the metabolic syndrome, and a study of energy expenditure of physical activities in youth.
