News Briefs 

 

  • Cheri Papier, MPH ’69, is living in Columbus, OH, where she teaches a community-based course on natural healing called “Staying Healthy in a Toxic World.”  She also teaches Reiki, plays the flute professionally in several groups, and has produced a number of CDs!  She and her husband, Gene Goldberg, have two sons, Allen (27) and Roger (24). 
  • Mark B. Horton, MSPH ‘76, has been appointed State Public Health Officer for the state of California.  He comes to this position after serving Orange County, CA as County Health Officer and Deputy Agency Director for Public Health Services since 1999.
  • Mary H. Mundt, MS ’77, has accepted the position of Dean at the Michigan State University School of Nursing.
  • Deborah Houston McCall, BSPH ’82, MPH ’89, is the Assistant Director for Dissemination and Training for the American Legacy Foundation.  In June 2006, she played a major role in planning the 3rd Annual American Legacy Foundation’s Health and Wellness Week.  Events included a scavenger hunt in which participants were required to tackle various challenges, such as building a human pyramid, to demonstrate the Foundation’s mission of “building a world where young people reject tobacco and anyone can quit.”
  • Erma Wright Manoncourt, PhD ’86, recently spent 3 months as the Resident Coordinator for the UN Country Team in Egypt, where she works as a UNICEF Country Representative.  She is currently working on a joint UN initiative, “Sailing the Nile,” which launches in October and will highlight the development work going on in the country. Stephen Daniels, PhD ’90, is the new Chairman of Pediatrics at the University of Colorado.  He was previously employed at the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital.
  • William W. Fraker, MPH ’87, had two poems selected for Muscadine Lines:  A Southern Anthology.  This collection of southern fiction, essays, and poetry was published by Cold Tree Press in August 2006 and can be found in most retail bookstores.
  • Jessica Tellez, MPH ’91, has spent six years working with a restorative justice program for the province of Nova Scotia, Canada.  She is currently a facilitator/mediator with the Community Justice Society, which aims to hold young offenders accountable for their actions in a meaningful way, repair harm, reintegrate the offender, and achieve a sense of healing for the victims and community. 
  • Mark Anthony White, MPH ’91, is working as a Foreign Service Officer for USAID in Kabul, Afghanistan.  He works in the Office of Social Sector Reform, which is expanding access to basic health services for women and children in rural and underserved areas.
  • Jessica Hamilton, BSPH ’94, is working as a Natural Resources Advisor to the governor of Oregon.  
  • Robyn Elliott, MHA ’95, has formed a lobbying firm called Ciekot and Elliott.  The firm lobbies on health care and civil rights issues before the Maryland General Assembly.
  • Susan Mims, MPH ’98, was named Medical Director of the Mission Children’s Hospital in Asheville, NC.
  • Belinda McSwain, BSPH ’00, will be joining the faculty at the University of Kansas this fall, in the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Architectural Engineering.
  • Christina Likirdopulos, MSPH ’01, and husband Eric Fischer, MS ’01, have become homeowners!  Their new house is in Worthington, OH.
  • Katrina Trivers, MPH ’03, PhD ’06, is working in Atlanta, GA at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.  She is an ORISE fellow in the Division of Cancer Prevention and Control.
  • Linda Rocafort, MPH ’04, has started a private practice, Access Nutrition, LLC, in Mebane, NC.
  • Karah Daniels, MPH ’05, is now married!  She has changed her name to Karah Daniels Mantinan.
  • Brian Fink, PhD ’06, is an Assistant Professor at the University of Toledo, which has recently merged with the Medical University of Ohio.
  • Ben Zarzaur, MPH ’06, is an Assistant Professor of Surgery at the University of Tennessee-Memphis Coleman College of Medicine
  • David Kim, PhD ’06, is a research fellow at Harvard University.
