Gillings Innovation Laboratories (GILs) UNC to study link between sustainable farming and health (6/2/08) 
Alice Ammerman, DrPH, a professor of nutrition at the UNC School of Public Health and director of the Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention, will lead a team of researchers in a Gillings Innovation Lab to study the public health impact of moving toward a local, sustainable food system. The project will be the eighth laboratory established through a generous gift to the School by Dennis and Joan Gillings.
Results of this two year study will improve understanding of the health, environmental and economic issues associated with this growing national trend. Although the research will be done in North Carolina, it will have national and international relevance.

School announces $2M of funding for five new Gillings Innovation Labs (4/16/08)
The UNC School of Public Health announced $2M of funding for five new Gillings Innovation Labs (GILs) to focus concentrated efforts on solving big public health problems. The projects were among more than 35 proposals submitted earlier this year. All were reviewed by a committee of subject-matter experts from around the country, and recommendations were given to the Dean, associate deans and department chairs for final funding decisions. Funding is for two years. Per GIL funding requirements, principal investigators are members of the School's faculty.

These awardees join two other GILs named last fall – the Center for Innovative Clinical Trials and the Carolina Global Water Partnership.

School announces its first Gillings Visiting Professor (9/24/07)
Sheila Leatherman has been named the first Gillings Visiting Professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Public Health. The professorship is part of Carolina Public Health Solutions, a program established in the School through a generous gift from Dennis and Joan Gillings. As a research professor, Ms Leatherman spends much of her time as a visiting professor or visiting scholar, evaluating and analyzing health care systems and issues throughout the world. The Gillings Visiting Professorship will provide the means for her to focus a portion of UNC’s public health research on microcredit and its impact on global health.
