HPAA 301 Field Training in Health Policy and Management I (3).
The first six weeks of a supervised twelve-week administrative internship in a healthcare organization. Required of all BSPH students in HPM.

Supervised field experience in approved health agencies. There is a field training fee.

HPAA 660 - International and Comparative Health Systems (3)
This course provides a framework for comparing health systems and understanding the forces that shape those systems. In addition, this course will consider various methodologies that have been used to compare and evaluate health systems, including measures of cost, quality, and access. In studying the health systems of specific countries, this course will examine various aspects of each system including organization, financing, regulation, privatization, and the health workforce.

HPAA 720 - Management of Human Resources in Health Organizations (3)
Permission of instructor required. Emphasis is on clarifying concepts of human resources management, identifying the importance of human resources in health organizations, establishing the need for relating strategic planning of organizations to their human resource planning, and on examining role of organizational culture in behavior and productivity. Selected topics from the field of personnel management and interpersonal skills will also be covered. Methods of instruction will include reading-based discussions, group and individual exercises, field research and case discussions.

HPAA 740 - Introduction to Health Care Financial Management (3)
A broad introduction to financial concepts, issues, tools and vocabulary. Topics include: financial statement analysis, Long-term financing, capital investment decisions, budgeting, cost finding and rate setting. Accounting proficiency exam given within first 2 weeks of class. Course objectives are 1) to understand fundamental financial management concepts and analytical techniques; 2) to apply fundamental financial management skills to health care organizations; 3) to be able to prepare microcomputer spreadsheet financial models; and 4) to be prepared for more advanced study. Methods of instruction will include lectures, cases, electronic spreadsheet preparation, problems, and exercises. An accounting module is offered several weeks prior to class. It is strongly suggested for those students without a strong accounting background.

HPAA 755 - Introduction to Health Policy and Politics (3)
This is an introduction to the major themes in U.S. health policy and politics with an emphasis on current issues in federal health policy. The course includes a review of the prominent interpretive paradigms of political science in the context of current events in health politics. There is a lesser focus on state health policy and some international comparisons. Students are asked to become involved in debates over current health policy issues.

Note: In an effort to integrate courses in the HPM Masters curriculum, we have arranged HPAA 564 and 755 to better complement each other. There will be several class sessions throughout the semester where students from both courses will be invited to join together for back-to-back sessions covering health care topics from 564 and considering political aspects from 755. Each course will remain separate entities, and students who cannot attend the other class will still be able to understand course content and excel in course exercises.

HPAA 772 - Methods for Health Policy Analysis and Technology Assessment (3)
Permission of instructor required. This course is an investigation of the theory, methods, and application of technology assessment in health care and covers basic methods used to identify policy issues, structure, a technology assessment study, measure and summarize health outcomes, estimate their value to patients or the public, identify the resources used, estimate cost of health resources, and construct and test mathematical models to make population and/or temporal predictions of outcomes and costs from limited data. Applications will be drawn from a variety of health care settings and will include the evaluation of pharmaceuticals.

HPAA 873 - Research Seminar in Health Policy and Management (1)
Required for 1st year doctoral students. This course is a seminar for students, faculty and others to present their research. About half of the seminars will be third year HPM doctoral students presenting dissertation work in progress. The remainder of the seminars will be faculty and visitors to the University presenting completed research or work in progress. The course goals are to inform doctoral students about the research interests and expertise of HPM faculty and other researchers, to expose doctoral students to examples of research being conducted by third year doctoral students, to acquaint doctoral students with selected University and non-university services that will be useful during coursework and the dissertation research process, and to improve the communication and presentation skills of third year doctoral students.

HPAA 883 - Analysis of Categorical Data (var.)
Prerequisite: HPAA 882 or equivalent. This course is an introduction to the analysis of categorical data using maximum likelihood and specification tests. Topics covered: econometric models in which the dependent variable is not continuous, including Logit, Probit, Tobit, two-part, and duration models.
