Hello.

Thank you for taking the time to come to this website to check out our Executive MHA or Executive MPH program. We hope you like what you see. We think we’re building something pretty special here.

Jim Porto, PhDBut we also know we may not be exactly what you’re looking for. It’s very possible we’re too demanding, too lengthy or just plain too expensive for you. It could also be you’re simply not comfortable with the notion of distance learning. (Even we will admit the technology is still not where it should or can be.)

If that is indeed the case, we certainly understand and wish you well. As much as we’d like to train every top future health executive in the U.S. and abroad, we know that’s not realistic. Besides, there are a lot of other excellent MHA or MPH programs out there, many of which are associated with Top Tier schools.

Having said all that…

…if you are searching for an Executive MHA or Executive MPH program that’s not afraid to be innovative and one that sets the bar pretty high – then maybe we’re a pretty good fit for you. You see, we believe that the next 50 years will be challenging ones—maybe even disastrous if we do not prepare for the changes coming. Climate change, oil depletion, emerging diseases, water shortages, healthcare access and the aging population, to name only a few problems, will complicate life throughout the rest of this century. We want to attract, recruit and then enroll truly motivated learners – those people who have a genuine thirst to learn and grow and who, as a result of their education with us, will then meet these challenges head on so that the world will be a better place. Simply put – that’s our Vision and Mission. We’re out to develop a cadre of managers and leaders who have the strategic, operational, managerial and critical thinking skills to steer us all towards a more humane and healthy environment. Sounds pretty noble, I know. But it’s what we believe and it’s how we shape our entire program. If you believe that too – if you feel as strongly as we do about making a contribution to this crazy world – then let’s begin together to build a personal life/career plan.

What’s the first step?

The first step is to share with us some basic information about yourself. You can do this in a couple of ways. First, you can go ahead and fill in basic data as part of our application process. (Don’t worry. No fee is required at this point.) Or you can e-mail me at jporto@email.unc.edu. If you do the latter, just tell me simply why you’d like to consider being a part of our program. Nothing lengthy. Just tell me where you’re at in your career and where you’d like to be. Let me add that none of this information will be shared with anybody except perhaps my staff and we promise to be very judicious in our communication efforts with you.

The second step (if you haven’t done so in the last five years) is to take the dreaded GRE. There’s no getting around it (unless you’ve got your MD, JD or PhD), so you might as well make the best of it. We need a decent score (especially on the Quantitative), so if it’s been a while since you studied math or if it’s not your strong suit – then I suggest you take a Prep Course. One of our alums (Frederick Sexton) has an excellent online GRE prep course (www.prepsuccess.com) that’s far less expensive than the other well-known brands, but you can’t go wrong if you take any one of them. Invest the time and money and it will help you enormously.

Perhaps the most important step is to carefully analyze and plan your family/work/financial and school schedules. Working full-time and going back to school at the graduate level is a big commitment. It requires some serious considerations and typically involves a period of adjustment. To cater to people’s schedules, we have two groups of students starting twice a year – one in August and one in December. Thus, if you can’t enroll in one, we can move you pretty easily into the other one.

The final step is to get all of your other materials completed and sent to us – such as your transcripts, resume, statement of purpose, etc – which can all be handled online – and pay the non-refundable application fee (currently $70).

Still interested?

Excellent. We really look forward to having you in our program.

Whatever decision you make with respect to your career and future – whether it’s with us or another school or you decide you don't need to continue your formal education – my very best wishes and take care.

Sincerely,

Jim Porto, PhD, MPA
