Many alumni go on to hold prominent appointments in a
variety of arenas. They teach and carry out research in university settings;
work with such organizations as Family Health International and Research
Triangle Institute; hold leadership positions within the government sector
(NCI, CDC) and around the world (WHO, CARE); or start up their own non-profits
(Senior PharmAssist). Those in the immediate area often maintain close ties to the
Department. They deliver guest lectures, serve as preceptors on internships, and
help graduating students find their first jobs. Even alumni who live further
away reconnect at the annual meeting of the American Public Health Association,
contribute to our biannual HBHE Alumni Newsletter, and serve as the
Department’s ambassadors, encouraging their own employees or students to apply
to our master’s and doctoral programs. For some alumni, appreciation for the knowledge and skills
gained during their time in the Department has led them to establish enduring
legacies. In 1999, James Briley (MPH 1950) initiated a scholarship that fully
supports two in-state master’s students each year. In 2000, Clarence Pearson
(MPH 1951) established the Scott and June Pearson Fund for Patient Advocacy, an
initiative that is helping the Department establish a focus in this area. |
