ESE offers six degrees ranging from the bachelors to the doctorate, with five of these under the auspices of the
We now offer an opportunity for undergraduate students at UNC-CH with appropriate science backgrounds to pursue dual bachelor's/master's degrees through our "Plus 1" program. This program is intended to allow students to complete a master's degree in ESE in one additional year beyond receipt of the bachelor's degree. Interested students should read the program description and requirements carefully.
We also offer the opportunity to pursue a dual master's degree between ESE and the Department of City and Regional Planning's MCRP degree.
The curriculum of the Department provides the vehicle through which degree requirements are met and learning objectives are satisfied. As a result of the size, diversity, and research focus of the Department, other important aspects of the curriculum are seminar programs, degree-required exams and defenses, and faculty advising and mentoring. Guide to choosing a graduate degree in ESE. PhD in Environmental Sciences and Engineering The PhD, a terminal degree, is intended for incoming students with a strong background in the sciences or engineering and prepares them for careers in basic and applied research, education, or Management in the field of environmental sciences and engineering. Master of Science (MS) The MS degree is intended for incoming students with a strong background in the sciences or engineering and prepares them for advanced education or careers in research, practice or management in the field of environmental sciences and engineering. Master of Science in Environmental Engineering (MSEE) The MSEE is intended for incoming students with an accredited undergraduate engineering degree. The MSEE prepares students for careers in practice, advanced education, research, or management in the field of environmental engineering. Master of Science in Public Health (MSPH) The MSPH is intended for incoming students with a strong background in the sciences or engineering and prepares them for advanced education or careers in practice, research, or management in the field of public health with emphasis in environmental sciences and engineering. Master of Public Health (MPH) The MPH degree, a terminal degree, is intended for incoming students with a background in health-related areas and prepares them for careers in practice or management in the field of public health with emphasis in environmental sciences and engineering.
Dual Master's Degree Program Between the Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering and the Department of City and Regional Planning We are partnering with the Department of City and Regional Planning (CRP) to offer students the opportunity to earn both the MCRP and one of the four master's degrees offered in ESE (MS, MSEE, MSPH, or MPH). It should be possible to obtain both degrees in three years. Bachelor of Science in Public Health (BSPH) The BSPH is a first degree intended to prepare students with a fundamental grounding in the basic and applied sciences for advanced scientific education, professional schools, or careers in practice in the field of public health with emphasis in environmental sciences or engineering. |
