Faculty
Our faculty work closely with our students, both in and out of the classroom. In the process of guiding student research, faculty build strong relationships with students through formal and informal interactions, which help students become well-trained, productive and community-minded.
Faculty research projects include both wet lab work as well as computational modeling, with results that often have applications locally, nationally and internationally. Research projects frequently involve collaboration with researchers at other universities and institutes, as well as other departments and divisions within the UNC system. Our faculty also engage in a number of service activities, such as serving in editorial positions for academic journals, reviewing papers and proposals, and participating in committees at the state and federal levels.
Students
During the day students attend classes, workshops, seminars and lectures. Students also have opportunities to take part in on-going research with faculty and to create their own research projects more specific to their areas of interest. In addition, students may be able to attend conferences and give presentations on their research nation wide. Publication of their completed work and research is the cumulative goal.
There are many other ways that students can get involved in the campus community. Within the department students can become involved in a variety of organizations that are run by students, ranging from volunteer programs for the community to discussion and support groups focused on academic topics. Through department events students can socialize with faculty, staff and peers. This provides students with an opportunity to learn about new prospects in the department, discuss current events and to exchange ideas. Some department events to look forward to are the ice cream socials, picnics and bagel breakfasts.
At the School and University level, student organizations and activities provide interactions with other students and community members. Chapel Hill also offers a wide variety of events, entertainment, sports, restaurants and music to give students a place to relax and have a good time.
Staff
Administrative staff members support department faculty, students and alumni by publicizing courses and events, managing records and important paperwork, and ensuring compliance with university systems. Research staff members support the faculty by overseeing the day-to-day research activities in their laboratories. They ensure that all research and manuscripts meet the highest scientific, technical and editorial standards. They also make sure that graduate students, post-docs, and visiting scholars have the resources they need to conduct their work effectively. Our administrative and research staff work in a friendly, team environment with state-of-the-art equipment.
Alumni
Many of our alumni have used the skills and knowledge that they gained at the School of Public Health to guide their own research and field work ambitions and become the new leaders in the field of public health. Although they are busy with their own thriving careers, many alumni still stop by frequently to lend a hand to a current student, to participate in faculty research projects or to attend a continued education course. Alumni sometimes stand in for lecturers, or participate in School community service projects or even recruit new students in whom they see potential. After graduation, alumni can still seek advising and mentorship from faculty or from the School’s career and professional development services.
