Admission requirements
In addition to the general University requirements, departmental requirements for the MS, MSPH, MPH, MSEE, and PhD include:
- Submission of completed application
materials. Please contact the departmental student services
office for dates.
- Bachelor’s degree from US accredited institution (or foreign equivalent) based upon four year curriculum.
- Official transcripts (two copies) for all completed academic work.
- Minimum GRE score of 1000, taken within five years of application.
- Three letters of recommendation (at least two from faculty).
- Two page statement of research interests and educational and professional objectives (PhD).
- Interviews (PhD) recommended.
- TOEFL and proof of financial support for international applicants.
- Successful completion of prerequisite and required courses (as applicable).
- The MSEE degree is restricted to students with an
accredited undergraduate degree in engineering or an equivalent
engineering degree from a foreign institution.

Application Procedures

- UNC Graduate School Deadline

Though ENVR makes admissions decisions, some financial awards are given
through the Graduate School. For full consideration for these awards,
the deadline is January 1. Spring admission deadline is October
15.
- ENVR Deadlines
-
All applications for fall received by May 31 will be reviewed by the
admissions committee. We must receive all materials by this deadline.
We urge you to apply by January 1. For Spring admissions we encourage
all applications to be complete by October 1.
- Decision Dates
-
Most decisions for fall applicants are made between January 15 and
March 15. The Graduate School will mail the official decision letter no
later than one week following the decision.

Terms For Which Applications Are Accepted

ENVR accepts applications for fall and spring admission.
- Financial Aid Information
- Applications with all required materials received
by January 1 will receive full consideration for Graduate School
fellowships. Applications received after that date will be considered
as funds remain available.

The School of Public Health and ENVR offer
financial assistance, guidance and awards for financing your education
as well.

- The Department encourages prospective students,
especially doctoral students, to visit before deciding whether to
attend our programs in Environmental Sciences and Engineering. An open
house is held in early fall. Ad hoc visits can be scheduled any working
day (M-F) throughout the year. Please contact ENVR Student Services if
you are interested in arranging an itinerary.
Step 5: Complete an Application
Applications are processed centrally through the UNC Graduate
School. The application is available online. Create
an account to begin the process. Once the fee is paid, the application
is processed and the profile is available to ENVR the next business day.
Step 6: Manage Your Application
You may track the progress of your application, verify the receipt of
your application materials and view the Department's admissions
decision online.

Application
materials
The following items are required to complete your application.
Materials for the Graduate School
Mail the following items to the Graduate School, The University of
North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Bynum Hall, CB 4010, Chapel Hill, NC
27599-4010:
- Application Fee. You may
visit the Graduate School’s webpage for price changes or to see if you
qualify for a fee waiver.
- Transcripts
- Mail one official transcript (GPA) from each institution where you
studied after high school bearing the signature of the registrar and
the seal of the institution.
- An official transcript from each institution is always required.
- A transcript is needed even if credits earned at
one institution appear on another institution's transcript as credits
transferred.
- International applicants must also submit a
certified English translation of transcripts not issued in English.
- Test Scores

Send recent GRE (past 5 years) or TOEFL (past 2 years) scores from the
Educational Testing Services website to the Graduate
School (UNC Code 5816). MCAT scores are acceptable for Medical Students
getting a concurrent degree with ENVR.

Supplemental Materials/Other Requirements

To claim NC residency for tuition purposes, complete the North Carolina
Residency Application.

Materials for the Department
Mail the following items to Registrar, Department of Environmental
Sciences and Engineering, School of Public Health, CB 7431, University
of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, NC 27599-7431:
- Transcripts

Mail one official transcript from each institution where you studied
after high school bearing the signature of the registrar and the seal
of the institution.
- An official transcript from each institution is always required.

A transcript is needed even if credits earned at
one institution appear on another institution's transcript as credits
transferred.
- International applicants must also submit a

Three (3) letters of recommendation
- CV or Résumé (not required but especially
recommended for persons with extensive work and/or internship
experience).
- Financial Certificate (international students only)
showing sufficient financial resources to cover educational and living
expenses for the duration of your program. Visit the Graduate School
- Statement of Interest/Purpose

There is no required format for the statement of interest. One, no more
than two pages explaining what you hope to study, why you have this
desire and how you see study in ENVR helping you to obtain your
objective. Use the Supplementary Information Form if not submitted
online.
