Michael D. Aitken Our environment is extraordinarily complex. No single discipline can study the effects of human activity on environmental systems, understand how pollution and other environmental perturbations influence human exposure to harmful agents, elucidate how those exposures translate to disease and individual susceptibility to disease, and develop technical or policy options to solve environmental problems and protect human health. Instead, multidisciplinary approaches are required to meet current and emerging environmental challenges. The Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering is unique in the extent to which it combines the physical sciences, health sciences, engineering, and policy in a single home. This multidisciplinary approach provides unique research opportunities to our faculty and students, and it prepares our graduates for leadership positions in a variety of careers.
We are proud to be one of the academic departments in a School of Public Health and a University with a long tradition of combining excellence with collegiality, scholarship with professional service, and research with advanced applications. Our faculty are internationally renowned for their expertise in a range of fields, our students have won numerous awards for their work, and our 2200-plus alumni are an ever-expanding source of pride for their contributions to society.
We welcome all who are dedicated to serious scholarly inquiry and who want to make a difference in their careers. Our goal is to provide a challenging but supportive environment, which requires a concerted effort by our faculty, students and staff. When you succeed, we succeed.
