The Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering (ESE) is one of the nation’s oldest, largest and most comprehensive programs offering research-based education in environmental science, engineering and policy.  Research and teaching in ESE have expanded to encompass the chemical, biological, toxicological and physical aspects of environmental and engineered processes, as well as the social, political and legal considerations of managing the quality of air, water and soil resources.

The Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering’s faculty members are heavily involved in scholarly research and actively engage graduate students in their efforts. Currently, department faculty members and students are involved in about 75 different externally funded research projects, ranging from metabolism of toxic chemicals to water quality in Asia and Africa.
