Training in Cardiovascular
Disease (CVD) Epidemiology CVD epidemiology is an interdisciplinary field of work. Trainees in CVD Epidemiology are encouraged to assume lead roles in a research project as early as possible, with support from their mentors. The program provides a considerable number and diversity of research opportunities to trainees (see reverse). Some are studies that have completed data collection and are at the stage of statistical analysis and publication; others maintain ongoing data collection activities in the field (as well as analyses and publications), others are in development phases. All are available and open to trainees through the contact persons listed. Trainees are encouraged to submit abstracts to national meetings to present their own work, be exposed to work in progress by other scientists in the field, and to make professional contacts. Funding opportunities NIH NRSA Institutional Training Grant Support for individuals who are training for a scientific career in cardiovascular disease epidemiology. The training program includes four pre-doctoral and four post-doctoral fellows. Several areas of emphasis exist at present:
NIH NRSA Individual Predoctoral Fellowships for Minority Students These fellowships provide up to five years of support for research training leading to the Ph.D. or equivalent research degree. Graduate Student Research Assistantships Research assistantships (RAs) offer students an opportunity to gain research-related experience, develop close working relationships with faculty, and earn co-authorship on peer-reviewed publications. Information is available from Student Services.
CVD seminars (Tuesdays from 12:30-1:30 p.m.. Contact persons are Sara Jones, Corey Kalbaugh. The seminar may be taken for 1 hr. credit (EPID897) |
