Since its establishment in 1955, the Department of Epidemiology at the University of North Carolina has become a leading international center for epidemiologic research. The Department of Epidemiology prepares students to conduct research and to teach. A multidisciplinary faculty offers experience in a broad range of research areas, including:

• cancer,
• cardiovascular disease,
• environmental and occupational factors,
• health care and pharmacoepidemiology,
• infectious diseases,
• injury, and
• reproductive programs.

The department maintains active collaborative relationships with other departments and research centers throughout the University, allowing students to take advantage of the resources of the entire University research community. In particular, many students are involved in research with the

• Carolina Population Center,
• Sheps Center for Health Services Research, the
• Injury Prevention Research Center, and the
• Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Epidemiology students take courses in other departments and curricula within the School of Public Health as well as in other divisions.

enhances our opportunities for enrolling excellent students and for providing an academic home for epidemiologists whose primary affiliation is with those other institutions. Thus we have as contributors to our program numerous distinguished adjunct faculty who provide a significant resource to our students and our primary faculty. UNC graduates have distinguished themselves in a wide variety of settings in the United States and internationally, in both public and private sectors.
