Additional Funding Information for International Applicants

The Department of Epidemiology welcomes international applicants.  Students from many countries are enrolled in our degree programs, and contribute greatly to life in the department.

Most international students arrive with funding from their home governments or institutions, from international agencies, or from private sources.  They are often able to supplement this funding through assistantships after their arrival. International students are eligible for most student assistantships.

There are, however, some special funding problems for international students:

  • Most assistantships cannot be arranged before the student's arrival.  Consequently, such an award cannot be listed on the financial certificate for visa purposes.
  • Most assistantships do not provide full support, particularly for an international student charged the full out-of-state tuition rate.  International students with assistantships covering a full semester are eligible for consideration for reduction of the tuition rate (a tuition remission scholarship) for that semester; however, as discussed above, only a few of these scholarships are available each year.
  • Most non-service traineeships and fellowships are restricted to United States citizens or those holding Permanent Resident status.

International applicants are strongly encouraged to begin the application process early, and to investigate non-University funding sources thoroughly.   Additional information for international students is available from the International Student and Scholar Services, CB# 5240, Room 2004 Global Education Center, Chapel Hill, NC  27599-5240.

International applicants needing financial assistance for study in the United States may wish to contact the Institute of International Education; U.S. Information Service Libraries; or U.S. Consulates abroad for information about possible sources of funding.

IARC Fellowship Program.  The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) offers fellowships to international junior scientists for research training in cancer.  Applicants should be junior scientists with some postdoctoral research experience related to cancer and who intend to pursue a career in cancer research.

Foreign Fulbright Graduate Student Program.    The Fulbright Program is a world leader in international educational exchange.  The goal of the Program is to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries through educational exchange.  All applications must go through either an applicant's home country's Commission or the United States Information Service post.  The Institute of International Education (IIE) cannot accept applications under any circumstances.  For more information contact the IIE's website.

American Association of University Women awards international fellowships for full-time study or research to women who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents.  Selection criteria include outstanding academic ability, professional potential, and the importance of the field of study to changing the lives of women and girls in the country of origin.
