Eligibility

All permanent SPA and EPA non-faculty employees of the School of Public Health are eligible for the Staff Excellence Award, with the exception of those who have received the award previously and those who are current members of the selection committee.

Selection Criteria

The annual monetary award and recognition are given to an employee who exemplifies outstanding work, as measured by:

  • Excellent attitude (a friendly, pleasant approach and a willingness to undertake additional tasks when others need assistance)
  • Leadership that inspires teamwork, a positive atmosphere and a consistent interest in working to achieve the mission of the School of Public Health
  • Outstanding initiative, including good problem-solving skills, performing "above and beyond" assigned tasks, and the ability to “make things happen.”

Selection Process

All faculty, staff and students are invited to nominate candidates.  Group nominations are encouraged and may include separate substantive statements by the nominators or only the nominators’ signatures following the nomination statement.  The form and its attachments should be no more than 3 pages in length.

Nominations should be submitted electronically between March and May each year (no later than 5 p.m. on the third Friday in May) to Linda Kastleman at linda_kastleman@unc.edu, using the nomination form provided here.

Nominations have closed for 2008.  Please look for further announcements in March 2009.

Selection Committee

The Staff Excellence Awards Committee will include the following, balanced across departments: departmental manager, registrar, clerical and/or administrative representative, research representative (social research assistant/associate or EPA non-faculty research associate), dean's office representative, EPA non-faculty representative (if not already represented by a manager or research representative), the two most recent past recipients (serving as chair and co-chair), and the awards manager.

The Awards Committee will prepare a recommendation to the Dean, who will make the final award determination.
