Global health projects funded in first round of Gillings Innovation Labs
April 23, 2008

Three Gillings Innovation Labs, funded by the Carolina Public Health Solutions program, will focus on important topics related to health in the developing world.

  • Single-dose vaccine for multiple respiratory viruses in infants and children (PI: Ralph Baric)
  • Portable field tests for fecal contamination of water (PI: Mark Sobsey)
  • Methods to explain origins of air pollution health effects and plan effective remediation (PI: William Vizuete)
These GILs, along with a study of the North Carolina mental health system and a plan to study data collection to improve disease management, join two other labs named last fall – the Center for Innovative Clinical Trials and the Carolina Global Water Partnership for the first round of funding by CPHS. [more]

What is Global Health?
Global Health may be defined as "health problems that transcend national boundaries, that may be influenced by circumstances or experiences in other countries, and that are best addressed by cooperative actions, and solutions; whether they occur in developing countries, countries in advanced transition, or industrialized countries." Research interests of some of the faculty and students in the UNC School of Public Health include infectious diseases, immigrant health, water resource planning, bioethics, infant nutrition, reproductive health, domestic violence, and obesity.
