IntraHealth International and the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health are offering a summer fellowship program for current public health masters' and doctoral students. The program is administered jointly by IntraHealth and the UNC SPH Office of Global Health.
IntraHealth International is a North Carolina-based non-profit organization that has empowered health workers to better serve communites in need for over 30 years in more than 90 countries. IntraHealth fosters local solutions to health care challenges by improving health worker performance, strengthening health systems, harnessing technology, and leveraging partnerships.
The Summer Fellows Program provides master's and doctoral students in the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health the opportunity to work directly in specific programmatic or cross cutting technical areas within IntraHealth. ObjectivesBy the end of the program, Fellows will be able to:
Program DescriptionThe Summer Fellows Program, chaired by Dr. Barbara Stilwell (see bio below), will last for 10 weeks for up to 3 interns from different programs within the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health. The Summer Fellows Program will be based at the Chapel Hill office of IntraHealth but may include a short international assignment based on project and funding. Each Fellow will be assigned a mentor who will help them to achieve his/her goals, including the accomplishment of an appropriate research project and paper that will fulfill program credit requirements. Fellows with a particular interest in any of the following areas are encouraged to apply:
A learning program of seminars will run 6 weeks including workshops, seminars and other learning experiences of direct relevance.These seminars will be led by IntraHealth staff. Fellows contribution is critical to create learning opportunities for both interns and IntraHealth staff, as views and ideas will be exchanged and developed.
In addition, Fellows will be encouraged to form a supportive group and to use each other to reflect on ideas and experiences. This process will be fostered through weekly guided reflective sessions led by an experienced facilitator, in which Fellows will be asked to describe their learning experiences of the week and to discuss with each other the value that these experiences have.
At the end of the program each Fellow will be asked to prepare a poster presentation and an exhibition will be displayed. UNC staff and other interested local organizations will be invited to attend for exhibition viewing and celebration of the end of the program.
Eligibility and BenefitsIn order to be eligible, applicants must be currently enrolled in a residential masters or doctoral degree program with the Gillings School of Global Public Health, and continuing as a full-time graduate student in fall 2012. In addition, they must be able to work 40 hours each week (not including holidays) for 10 weeks, from May 21, 2012 through July 27, 2011. Those chosen to participate in the Summer Fellows Program will receive a summer stipend of $2,500.

Applications should be submitted by Wednesday, January 25, 2012 for consideration. A public health faculty review committee will review applications and forward them to IntraHealth. IntraHealth will review all applications and schedule interviews with selected applicants. IntraHealth will notify awardees by late March 2012.
Barbara Stilwell, PhD, MSc, FRCN
Barbara Stilwell is an internationally-recognized expert in human resources for health and health systems strengthening. For over 20 years, she has championed the needs of underserved populations in Africa, Australia, and the Caribbean, actively engaged in enabling health workers in isolated, low-income settings to successfully implement health programs and maximize limited resources. She is best known for her influence in advancing the role of nurse practitioners as an important cadre of health workers in the UK. Dr. Stilwell currently serves as the Director of Human Resources for Health and Systems Strengthening for IntraHealth, providing high-level technical guidance to the global Capacity Project and other IntraHealth-led endeavors. Prior to joining the Capacity Project, Dr. Stilwell worked for the World Health Organization in health systems development, with a particular focus on workforce strengthening. She was one of the principal authors of the World Health Report, 2006. Before joining WHO, Dr. Stilwell was the Program Director and a principal lecturer at the Institute of Advanced Nursing Education at the Royal College of Nursing in London, serving as an influential advisor to the British government on health care issues. Dr. Stilwell holds a master's degree in global development management, postgraduate research degrees and a first degree in social psychology, all obtained in her native UK. |
