Q: When does the summer part of the Fellowship program take place, at the beginning or end of the Fellowship? Q: Is tuition paid for by the Fellowship? Q: Are all students fees paid for by the Fellowship? Q: My faculty advisor does not know me that well, do they have to write one of the two required recommendations for me?
A: Yes, your academic advisor must write a letter of recommendation. You may include additional letters of recommendation from other faculty or employers which will be taken into consideration during the application review process.
Q: I am a prospective PhD student, and do not yet have a UNC faculty advisor. Who should write my academic recommendation letter?
A: For a PhD student who would be starting in the Spring semester (January 2012), and would be able to meet the application deadline, a letter of recommendation from a recent academic source would be appropriate for submission.
Q: What do you mean by "professional recommendation"?
A: You must provide a letter from a previous employer in your application package. This letter should speak to your abilities demonstrated during your time of employment.
Q: Can a student use their time in the Fellowship program to also count towards their practicum requirements?
A: This is dependent on departmental requirements, and the student would need to check with their department's Student Service Manager to see if the Fellowship program would fulfill the necessary requirements.
Q: Can distance students apply for the Fellowship?
A: The Fellowship program is designed to have the student to work with a project director at FHI 360. The project director will be at the FHI 360 office located in Chapel Hill, NC, which requires the student to be able to work in the FHI 360 office during the summer portion of the program, as well as the Academic Year.
