Question:  What degree options are available in Health Behavior and Health Education?

Answer:

MPH: Master’s in Public Health

Question:  Does Health Behavior and Health Education offer joint degrees?

Answer:  Yes, a dual degree program is offered jointly by our Department and the Department of City and Regional Planning.  MPH/MRP graduates apply behavioral and social science methods to problems of public health and government and to the interdisciplinary union of engineering and design with behavioral and social sciences.

Question:  What is the required minimum score on the GRE? 

Answer:  The Graduate School guidelines recommend a minimum of 50% on the verbal and quantitative.  The Department has an average combined GRE score of approximately 1200.

Question:  What is Health Behavior and Health Education?

Answer:  Health Behavior and Health Education is one of seven departments in the School of Public Health.  The Department focuses on health-related social and behavioral change, ranging from the levels of social policy to those of community, family, and individual.

Student information

Question:  Is it possible to take classes in other departments or schools?

Answer:  Yes.  For no additional tuition fee, you can take any classes at UNC, but only graduate level classes count toward your MPH.

Question:  Can doctoral students be exempt from any of the first-year classes?

Answer:  If you have experience in theory or research, exemption exams are available for HBHE 130 and 250.  Contact the professors teaching the courses for details.

Question:  Can doctoral students receive credit for previous master’s level coursework? 

Answer: Yes and transfer credit can count toward program requirements.  During your first “End of Year Review” you can begin the process of transferring credits.  You need the course syllabi from the master’s level classes that you took.

Answer:  The best ways to find a research assistant job are to:

  • Search the Department and the School of Public Health websites for faculty member who conduct research that interests you. Find their contact information and email them ASAP. Continue to follow up.
  • Review the job postings on the School of Public Health and department websites.
  • Have a resume or CV ready so you can interview right away.
