| Patient Advocacy Project Enters Second Year |

The Department of Health Behavior and Health Education recently learned that it has been awarded a grant by the Agency for Healthcare Quality and Research (AHRQ) to hold a second Patient Advocacy Summit. The national conference, which will take place in Spring 2005, will bring together a diverse group of leaders in public health, medicine, law, social work, and other professions for the purpose of developing a textbook, and disseminating ideas and information, about patient advocacy. Among other issues, the conference and resulting textbook will explore patient-centered care, e-health, patient safety, grassroots patient advocacy, and health communication. The conference will be a follow up to the successful summit held in Chapel Hill in November 2003. At that time 50 leaders from across the country discussed essential components of advocacy: building relationships between patients and providers, increasing patient education and participation, and improving access to health care.
