Gillings Merit Scholars selected

Fifteen students at UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health have been designated as 2011-2012 Gillings Merit Scholars. The scholarships, established in 2010 to help the School recruit graduate students with exceptional promise and potential, are made possible through a $50 million gift to the School from Dennis Gillings and Joan Gillings.

This year's awardees include Valerie Smith (biostatistics); Wendy Marth (environmental sciences and engineering); Alexandre Lockhart (epidemiology); Marissa Hall and Lauren Mary Hill (health behavior and health education); Autumn Locklear, Makenzie McIntosh, LeVelton Thomas and Kerone Walker (health policy and management); Molly Ruben and Melissa Sanchez (maternal and child health); Stephanie Mazzucca and Emma Tzioumis (nutrition); and Jennifer Neumann and Scott Owens (public health leadership program).

"I feel very privileged to be one of this year's Merit Scholars from the health policy and management department," Autumn Locklear said. "The award gives me peace of mind, knowing that I don't have to find a way to pay for this portion of my tuition, and it gives me the confidence I need to finish the program and pursue my professional goals."

Locklear is interested in reproductive health policy.

"These students already have broad interests and remarkable experience," said Julie MacMillan, MPH, interim senior associate dean at the public health school. "What they learn and do next will be exciting to watch. We're so pleased they chose Carolina."
