New president of Korean university has ties
to School of Public Health
Dr. Hanjoong Kim recently
has been appointed president of
Seoul, South Korea’s
Yonsei University.
Kim, a candidate in the UNC School of Public Health’s doctor of public health
program in Health Policy and Management from 1985 to 1988, is one of several
distinguished South Korean public health professionals with ties to the UNC
Schools of Public Health and Medicine.
Prior
to his appointment as university president, Kim served as professor in Yonsei’s
Department of Preventive Medicine and Public Health and as dean of the Graduate
School of Public Health.
Kim
received doctor of medicine, doctor of philosophy and master of public health
degrees in
South Korea.
Other
School of
Public Health alumni also have achieved
success in the South Korean public health system.
Dal
Sun Han, president of the Korean Public Health Association and president
emeritus of
University in Chuncheon,
Gangwon-do,
South Korea, earned a doctor
of public Health in Health Policy and Management from UNC in 1981 after
receiving doctor of medicine and master of public health degrees at
Seoul
National
University.
Young
Moon Chae, current dean of the
School
of
Public Health at
Yonsei
University,
received a doctor of philosophy in health informatics from UNC in 1982.
In
e-mail correspondence with his colleague, Dr. Arnold Kaluzny, professor in the
UNC Department of Health Policy and Management, Chae said, “You should be
proud that [your department] produced two presidents of Korean universities.
Thank you very much for the good education that [the department] provided for
us.”
Chae
visited the UNC School of Public Health last summer and continues to
collaborate with faculty members at the School.

Alison (Bloom) Dunton married Jason Dunton in August 2004 and is a Quality Analyst in the Quality Management Department at Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula in Monterey, California.
Andrea Booth is the Senior Administrative Division Manager of Pediatric Cardiology at Johns Hopkins Medical Center.
Anna (Wulfsberg) Johnson is a fourth year PhD student in the Department of Epidemiology at UNC.
Dia Lee Tornatore married Bert Wilkins (MHA ’02) at the Playa Espadilla in Quepos, Costa Rica in 2005. They currently live in Seattle. Dia received her JD in May and is currently a practicing attorney and project director with the Washington State Department of Social & Health Services.
Emily Costich is currently the Lead Medicare Policy Analyst and Policy Coordinator for the Federal Office of Rural Health Policy in Washington, D.C.
Eric Logue is a consultant in the Healthcare Strategic Planning Group with Navigant Consulting, Inc. in Atlanta.
Gwen Kantner Harrison is an Administrator of FutureCare Chesapeake, a 154-bed skilled nursing facility.
Heather Wayco is QI/QA Coordinator with the Food and Nutrition Department of Providence Hospital in Washington, D.C.
Jeff Sanders is the Operations Officer for the Urban North Region of Intermountain Health Care in Salt Lake City.
John Blalock is currently in the Radiology Department at NCBH.
Joyce (Correa) Jendro is Director of Outpatient Cancer Care Services at St. Joseph’s Hospital in St. Paul, Minnesota, responsible for day-to-day operations, business development and process improvement for outpatient infusion therapy, radiation therapy, mammography, and the Cyberknife Center.
Judy Baracz is the Associate Director of Finance for the Woodruff Health Sciences Center in Atlanta.
Melissa (Fruhbeis) Cornish is a Management Research Analyst in the Office of the Vice President for Research and Strategic Affairs for the Biodesign Institute at Arizona State University, where she is working on a variety of strategic initiatives.
Monique Sneed is Coordinator of Admitting/Registration Administration at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago.
Sabrina (Suber) Vereen is Assistant Vice President, Practice Administration for Piedmont Healthcare Management Group in Charlotte, specializing in physician business services for emergency and hospitalist practices.
Sean Richardson is Chief Operations Officer at Community Hospital of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Susan Dyson is a Research Associate at UNC’s Sheps Center.
Vi Huynh is an Administrator in the Department of Neurology at the Cleveland Clinical Foundation in Ohio.
