General Information

 The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program looks for students with a strong academic record, a creative mind, and a focus on health services research and health policy. Many factors are considered when evaluating applicants for admission. Matching students with an appropriate faculty advisor is critically important.

Application Deadlines

The deadline for applications is January 10. Applications for the next academic year become available in September.

INTERNATIONAL APPLICANTS - Recent changes in the process for obtaining a visa may considerably lengthen an already slow visa approval process. International applicants should submit materials as early as possible, and preferably not later than December 1. Applications that are submitted after that date may have to be resubmitted for the following academic year.

Required Application Materials

The following materials are required for the application process:

• Completion of online Graduate School application. Start your application by creating an account and following the instructions.Applications for the next academic year are available in August. A current email address is a required field on the application since all correspondence is conducted by email.  If you have problems with the online form, contact the Graduate School.
• Non-refundable fee
• GRE scores that are no more than five years old. NOTE: UNC institution code for the GRE #5816. 
• Transcripts (complete, not selected courses). One unofficial transcript from each university attended must be uploaded within the application. If offered admission, one paper official transcript for each university attended will be required.
• The email address of three recommenders will be required within the application for electronic submission and delivery.
• Resume.
• Essay. Upload a brief essay (up to 4 pages in length) that addresses the issues listed below. Use this statement to provide the Admissions Committee with detailed information relevant to your application that is not otherwise available.
  • Why do you wish to study health policy and/or health services research?
  • Please describe any previous research experience you have had.
  • Please describe how your proposed minor area will fit into your projected career plans.
  • Discuss the way in which your past educational, research and/or work experience(s) will contribute to your proposed studies at UNC.
  • Indicate faculty members in the Department who most closely match your interest.
    

International Applicant Requirements

• TOEFL or IELTS score no more than two years old. Applicants are considered for admission if they have high TOEFL or IELTS scores and there is evidence of high proficiency in written and spoken English (personal statement and interview.)  UNC is institution #5816.
