The Department of Health
Policy and Management has a very active and well-funded research program
addressed to these issues.
Child Health Services covers a broad area of issues
related to the health and well-being of both well and chronically ill
children. Our interests include not only
the health of this population but also the characteristics of the providers and
organizations who serve them, such as physicians, children’s hospitals, and the
foster care system.
The Department of Health Policy
and Management is a leader in conducting informative research on the
incentives, costs, and use of health insurance and the safety net.
Mental
illnesses and substance abuse disorders are among the most common conditions
affecting health today. Most
Americans face barriers to equal access to treatment and preventive health
services due to stigma, lack of adequate insurance coverage for mental health,
poor coordination of mental health services with primary care, and high costs
of medication. Persons who access substance abuse services have high drop-out
rates.
