Students from Maternal and Child Health participate in monthly research exhibit

In the most recent of its monthly poster displays, the Office of Research recognized the efforts of thirteen participating individuals or teams from the Department of Maternal and Child Health.  An awards ceremony on Monday, April 23 particularly commended three research posters, chosen by a faculty panel for their substantive content and attractive presentation:

·         Joseph Lee, Shilpa Rajagopal and Julia Wacker, for “Nursing the Kindergarten Health Assessment Back to Health”

·         Karen Neiswender, for “The Association Between Maternal Education and Firstborn’s Receipt of the Third DTP Vaccination in Tanzania”

·         Isabelle Michaud-Letourneau, with Dr. Miriam Labbok, for “Do the WHO Growth Standards Apply When Children Are Exclusively Breastfed for 6 Months?”

The posters were on display in the atrium of the Michael Hooker Research Center between April 16 and 26, and student researchers were available to discuss their findings during the morning of April 23, just prior to the awards event.
Dr. Herbert Peterson, chair of the Department of Maternal and Child Health, commented on the superior quality of all the work on display and expressed pride in the department’s student research.

·         Sheryl W. Abrahams, with Dr. Miriam Labbok, for “The Impact of the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative on Trends in Exclusive Breastfeeding: Implications for National Program Planning”

·         Stephanie Moultrie and Dara Mendez, with Dr. Vijaya Hogan, for “Racial and Ethnic Differences for Paid Infant Medicaid Clains in NC, 2004”

·         Lucy Wilson, Bhakti Mehta, Saye Baawo and Becky Straub, for “Assessing the Reach and Impact of two Key Measure Evaluation Publications”

·         Heather Bergmann and Bhakti Mehta, for “Team Mouthguard: A Project to Increase Availability and Usage of Custom-made Mouthguards to Student Athletes in Orange County, N.C.”

·         Nidhi Khosla, for “An Interdisciplinary Approach to Understanding and Combating Sex Trafficking”

The Dean’s Office and Student Affairs co-sponsor the monthly poster exhibits. 

Students in the Department of Nutrition will display their research in the School’s atrium during the week of May 7.
