Lucas named recipient of 2012 Chipman Alumni Award![]() Lucas MPH '00 After earning her MPH in 2000, Bronwyn began to work with youth in health promotion. In 2003, she and her colleagues developed a Youth Empowerment Model that now serves as the theoretical and practical framework for her work. In 2008, she co-founded a statewide nonprofit, Youth Empowered Solutions (YES!), where she now serves as Executive Director. Bronwyn has effectively mobilized thousands of teen across NC over the past 10 years to be involving in local and statewide policy advocacy efforts, a social marketing media campaign and peer education. In addition to the direct impact of her work on the health of teens, state leaders have publicly acknowledged and recognized her advocacy work and the advocacy efforts of the teens in the programs she has developed. She has clearly shown great leadership in the field of adolescent health. Because of her outstanding work, the North Carolina Medical Journal chose to highlight her in the July/August 2010 NC Medical Journal, Adolescent Health in North Carolina, as an individual who has made "health care for North Carolinians more accessible and of higher quality." Mendoza receives "40 Hispanic Leaders Under 40" Award![]() Zipatly Mendoza The award is presented by Chicanos por la Causa Inc., a community development corporation that offers educational and social services and services in economic and community development to low- and middle-income Arizona residents of Mexican descent.
The "40 Hispanic Leaders Under 40" program recognizes leaders in the community who make positive contributions to life in the Phoenix area. Mendoza currently serves as the office chief for the Arizona Health Disparities Center at the Arizona Department of Health Services where she is responsible for working with government officials and community partners to build the state's capacity to address health disparities.
