MCH Students at APHA.Student Life     Students at the Department of Maternal and Child Health enjoy ongoing interaction with professors and experts in the MCH field due to small class sizes and an informal, collegial environment – where relationships are a valued component of academics. A unique attribute of this department is the supportive environment created, sustained and enjoyed by all. While Rosenau Hall is under renovation to improve the physical environment for students, faculty and staff, MCH classes are primarily being conducted in McGavern-Greenberg and the newly constructed Michael Hooker Research Center .

These buildings in the School of Public Health complex offer state-of-the-art classrooms and a comfortable atmosphere for individual and group learning.

Graduate studies for MCH students extend beyond the classroom to leading MCH agencies, both domestic and international. Given the close proximity of many of these agencies, it’s no wonder that many of our students decide to stay in the area to further their studies and careers.

Dr. Kavita Singh, Research Assistant Professor

Faculty Life     Our faculty are committed to advancing the field of MCH through excellence in research, teaching and practice.

One of the distinctive features of MCH faculty research is its strong focus on practice and the translation of knowledge into the practice of MCH. Our department and our faculty take pride in engaging in research that makes a difference and has direct application and impact on policy and population health. This hallmark of our department has been an essential component of our identity, our mission, and our vision for the future.

Faculty members benefit from the rich mix of disciplines represented in our department, with many of our faculty having extensive experience as leaders within practice and research settings, providing students with multiple opportunities to engage in research and mentoring. While our faculty are highly effective investigators contributing to improvements in the science and practice of MCH, they are also strongly committed to their mission of training the MCH leaders of tomorrow.

Tobie Barton receives the Star Heels Award from Dr. Herbert Peterson.Staff Life    Our staff members are an intrinsic part of carrying out our department’s collective mission. MCH staff roles and responsibilities vary from research to administration and areas of technical specialization, such as communications, technology, student services and development.

While many of our staff are located in our administrative offices in Rosenau Hall, others are offsite contributing to research projects in satellite offices in Chapel Hill and Raleigh. University resources are accessible to all MCH staff, including opportunities for professional growth and academic advancement. From providing support to students and faculty, to extending the reach of the department, staff are engaged in all aspects of the life of MCH and enabling us to move forward to the future.

MCH Alumni, Ann Ringland, Caroline WhiteheadAlumni     The MCH alumni network brings together graduates in fellowship and common purpose to support the department and further the field of MCH. Our alumni serve diverse roles as adjunct faculty, field preceptors, mentors, guest lecturers and as collaborators with faculty and students on research, teaching and practice initiatives.

The culture within MCH is one in which career mentoring is highly valued and opportunities abound for alumni at all levels of professional development. We encourage our alumni to stay closely connected to the department and offer seminars and events throughout the year to provide a venue for alumni to meet current students and reconnect with faculty and staff.

Our MCH alumni can be found throughout the world. We particularly benefit from the fact that a disproportionate share of our alumni stay in Chapel Hill or in the Research Triangle area, given the high number of MCH organizations and the demand for our graduates. Our alumni are warmly welcomed and recognized for their contributions to training the next generation of MCH leaders.
