Admission requirements
MCH seeks to admit applicants whose career goals are firmly based in fields related to maternal and child health. Admission is for the fall semester except in unusual circumstances. Application information and materials are available online at the Graduate School website. Admission requirements include:
- Submission of completed application materials by December 1 (suggested) or January 1 for full consideration for graduate school fellowships.
- Applicants with post-bachelor’s MCH-related experience will be given priority
- BSN, MSN, MS, MSW, MD, DDS/DMD or bachelor’s degree in related field
- Minimum GPA of 3.0
- Statement of professional goals (750 word limit) as described in supplemental instructions for MCH applicants
- Three letters of recommendation
- Official transcripts for all completed academic work
- GRE, MCAT or equivalent entrance exam scores taken within five years of application
- TOEFL and completed financial certificate for international applicants

Step 1: Decide Which Degree Is For You
Step 2: Review Application Deadlines
- UNC Graduate School Deadline
- MCH is responsible for all admissions decisions, however some financial awards are decided through the Graduate School. For full consideration for these awards, the deadline is January 1.
- MCH Deadlines
- All applications received by January 1 will be reviewed by the admissions committees. We must receive all materials by this deadline for you to be considered and nominated for a Graduate School award. While we continue to review applications beyond this date, we urge you to apply early. Admissions are conducted on a rolling basis which informs the ultimate closing date for admissions.
- Decision Dates
- Most decisions are made between January 15 and March 15. The Graduate School will mail the official decision letter no later than July 1 for fall admissions.
- Terms For Which Applications Are Accepted
- You may apply only for fall admission. Spring admission is only considered in exceptional circumstances and after consultation with the Department.
- Financial Aid Information
- Applications with all required materials received by January 1 will receive full consideration for Graduate School fellowships. Applications received after that date will be considered as funds remain available.

- The School of Public Health and HBHE offer financial assistance, guidance and awards for financing your education as well.

Step 5: Complete an Application
Applications are processed centrally through the UNC Graduate School. The application is available online. Create an account to begin the process. Once the fee is paid, the application is processed and the profile is available to MCH immediately.

You may track the progress of your application, verify the receipt of your application materials and view the Department's admissions decision online.

Application materials
The following items are required to complete your application.
Materials for the Graduate School
Mail the following items to the Graduate School, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Bynum Hall, CB 4010, Chapel Hill, NC 27599-4010:
- Application Fee. You may visit the Graduate School’s webpage for price changes or to see if you qualify for a fee waiver.
- Transcripts
- Mail one official transcript from each institution where you studied after high school bearing the signature of the registrar and the seal of the institution is needed.
- An official transcript from each institution is always required.
- A transcript is needed even if credits earned at one institution appear on another institution's transcript as credits transferred.
- International applicants must also submit a certified English translation of transcripts not issued in English.
- Test Scores
- Send recent GRE (past 5 years) or TOEFL (past 2 years) scores from the Educational Testing Services website to the Graduate School (UNC Code 5816).
- MCAT scores are acceptable in place of GRE scores, but not recommended.
- Make sure you have completed your FAFSA to quality for additional financial aid

Materials for the Department
Mail the following items to Registrar, Department of Maternal and Child Health, School of Public Health, CB 7445, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, NC 27599-7445:
- Three letters of recommendation
- Transcripts for each degree received
- Financial Certificate (international students only) showing sufficient financial resources to cover educational and living expenses for the duration of your program.
- Personal interviews
** A completed Financial Certificate is required in addition to the award letter or scholarship notification letter from an Agency or Government. If a student will be using personal support, a bank statement showing first year’s support, converted to US dollars and certified by a bank, is required with your application for admission. Since the Masters' Program requires summer field placement, summer registration is required. Please contact Yvette Thompson for more details. Visit the Graduate School webpage for more information.**
Professional Goals Statement
In order to determine if either program is appropriate for your educational and professional needs, please use the outline below in developing a personal statement, no more than two pages in length, answering the following questions. Your application will not be considered complete without this statement. You will submit this statement as part of the Graduate School Application.
Master’s Program (MSPH, MPH)
- Describe briefly those responsibilities and activities that are relevant to MCH in your previous work and/or volunteer experiences.
- What are your learning goals and objectives that motivate your application for admission to this department at this time?
- What knowledge, skills and strengths do you bring? What knowledge and skills need strengthening?
- What career objective would you like to explore or prepare for as part of your graduate program?
- (Briefly) How did you learn about our program?
Doctoral Program (DrPH, PhD)
- What experiences have you had which are relevant to your education and career goals?
- What specific areas would be the major concentration in your doctoral studies? List minor areas of study if applicable.
- What research problem(s) might you want to address for a dissertation?
- What career do you intend to pursue after the program?
- How will a doctoral degree in Maternal and Child Health contribute to your career goals?
