The Department of Maternal and Child Health was established in June 1950, eleven years after the creation of the  School of Public Health at UNC. Initial funding was provided by the US Department of Labor's Children's Bureau. Dr. Sidney S. Chipman served as the founding chair of the department, and he was joined on the faculty by Jean Rebentisch, a nurse. Geraldine Gourley, a medical social worker, joined the faculty in 1953. The faculty has since grown significantly to its present size of 19 full-time and 65 adjunct faculty, representing a diversity of disciplines, ranging from medicine, sociology, and social work to nutrition, epidemiology, and demography.

The following have served the Department of Maternal and Child Health as chair:

  • Dr. Sidney S. Chipman 1950-1967
  • Dr. Earl Siegel 1967-1975
  • Dr. Naomi Morris 1975-1977
  • Dr. C. Arden Miller 1977-1987
  • Dr. Elizabeth Watkins 1987-1988
  • Dr. Milton Kotelchuck 1988-1995
  • Dr. Jonathan Kotch (acting) 1995-1996
  • Dr. Pierre Buekens 1996- 2002
  • Dr. Jonathan Kotch (interim) 2003
  • Dr. Herbert Peterson 2004-Present

Building on the tradition of funding established by the Children's Bureau in its original grant, the department currently receives support from the Maternal and Child Health Bureau of the Health Resources and Services Administration of the USDHHS, various institutes of the National Institutes of Health, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, and private foundations. External funding for faculty research, training, and service activities exceeds $4 million annually. The department has also begun recently to build its endowment, with the establishment of the Earl and Gladys Siegel Student Support Fund and the Helen and Arden Miller Endowment for Faculty Support.

Over the more than 50 years of the department's history, more than 800 students have received MPH or MSPH degrees. The first DrPH degree was awarded in 1973 and the PhD program was initiated in 1999. Students representing more than 40 countries have completed the program. Currently 56 students are enrolled in the graduate program for 2007-2008.
