Current issues

Public health is faced with emerging challenges and opportunities every day: pandemic influenza, health department accreditation, and legal preparedness, to name just a few. The School of Public Health is addressing these challenges and opportunties.

These programs of the North Carolina Institute for Public Health impart timely and practical knowledge about ongoing and emerging public health issues:

Active Living by Design
Active Living by Design is a national program of The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation established to create and promote environments that make it safe and convenient for people to be more physically active. The goal of Active Living by Design is to encourage changes in design, transportation and policies to cultivate and support active living, a way of life that integrates physical activity into daily routines.

NC Center for Public Health Preparedness
The mission of the NC Center for Public Health Preparedness is to improve the capacity of the public health workforce to prepare for and respond to terrorism and other emerging public health threats by assessing the competency of the public health workforce in core public health skills and bioterrorism preparedness, facilitating training to meet the assessed needs, and carrying out applied research on emerging health issues.

North Carolina Preparedness and Emergency Response Research Center
The North Carolina Preparedness and Emergency Response Research Center is one of seven centers at schools of public health funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to strengthen and improve public health preparedness capacity through systems and services research. NCPERRC focuses on North Carolina public health systems and capabilities to develop and maintain sustainable preparedness and response systems.

Public Health Grand Rounds
Public Health Grand Rounds is a series of webcasts presenting real-world case studies on public health issues. Its purpose is to promote a leadership-level, professional dialogue on emerging, news-breaking issues of strategic significance. It has covered topics ranging from public health accreditation to SARS, birth defects prevention to antimicrobial resistance, disease prevention in Uganda to flu preparedness in California.

Public/Private Legal Preparedness Initiative
Events like Hurricane Katrina and pandemic flu preparations underscore the vital importance of improving coordination between the public and private sectors regarding emergency preparedness.  The Public /Private Legal Preparedness Initiative is designed to improve emergency preparedness and response by removing the legal barriers that hinder effective and timely collaboration between the private, nonprofit, and public sectors.
