Introduction to Public Health in NC

This online module was developed as a component of a new- or recently-hired employee orientation for health departments. The module will take 1.5 to 2 hours to complete. 

 

Public Health Ethics

A short course developed to explore such questions as: Is there a public health ethic? Is it different from medical ethics? And is it the same as public health laws? This series of modules explores these and other questions about ethics in public health. The series will discuss:

  • Why medical ethics doesn't meet the needs of public health;
  • The values and beliefs inherent to a public health perspective;
  • 12 principles for the ethical practice of public health;
  • How public health's legal powers relate to public health ethics.

 

Boards of Health Training

Protecting Your Public: The Environmental Health Orientation, a two-part DVD designed to introduce and explain the scope of work being done by environmental health specialists in the state of North Carolina. Copies of this two-DVD set may be purchased from the NC Institute for Public Health for $20.

Orientation for Local Boards of Health: An Instructional Module was designed to familiarize board members with the practice of public health, the role of the board of health, its functions and legal responsibilities. CD and materials are available by calling 919-843-8614.

The Board of Health Rulemaking Authority: A Primer for Local Boards of Health, produced by the NC Institute for Public Health and the UNC School of Government, is an online module designed to bolster your knowledge about the rulemaking responsibility, boundaries and procedures by answering some of the fundamental questions about board of health rules.

 

Public Health Nursing Videoconferences

Many of our public health nursing conferences are offered as videoconferences at sites around the state, often in collaboration with the UNC Schools of Nursing and Medicine and the North Carolina Division of Public Health. Titles include:

Public Health Grand Rounds

This broadcast series, produced by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the UNC School of Public Health, features community health case studies on timely public health topics reviewed by a panel of experts. The free one-hour programs air live via satellite and webcast three or four times a year. Archived versions are available for viewing online and CDs are available for purchase.

North Carolina Center for Public Health Preparedness Training Site
The North Carolina Center for Public Health Preparedness offers a series of free short Internet-based trainings on public health preparedness, focusing on such topics as surveillance, agents of bioterrorism, and emerging and re-emerging disease agents.

Developed by the NC Center for Public Health Preparedness, the Public Health Workforce Development System assesses your individual training needs and interests, identifies training opportunities that meet those needs, and tracks for you the trainings you choose to take.

Epidemiology Online
Epidemiology Online is a product of the education and training program of ERIC in Durham, NC and the Health Care Epidemiology Program in the UNC School of Public Health's Department of Epidemiology. It is a series of one and two-hour short Web-based courses in epidemiology. These courses cover a variety of topics. Participants who successfully complete a course can print a personalized certificate for their records. 

Public Health Nutrition for the 21st Century
This program, produced by the Department of Nutrition, provides an introduction to the meaning, scope, and applications of nutrition to public health practice, placing particular emphasis on addressing Healthy People 2010 objectives relevant to MCH and nutrition.There are six six online training modules that address barriers public health professionals encounter when interested in acquiring skills for linking nutrition research to action. Each module is composed of six parts, each with a narrated multimedia presentation, followed by a five-question quiz.
