Office of Continuing Education

The Office of Continuing Education provides learning and development opportunities to health and human service practitioners, researchers, educators, and citizens in North Carolina, the nation, and the world. OCE presents more than 150 courses each year to thousands of students in a wide array of formats: conferences, workshops, short courses, seminars, teleconferences, satellite broadcasts, webcasts, and scientific meetings.

North Carolina Occupational Safety and Health Education and Research Center

The NC Occupational Safety and Health Education and Research Center (OSHERC) provides quality educational opportunities for professionals and researchers with the responsibility of ensuring workplace safety and health. OSHERC offers academic degree and professional continuing education programs, covering safety; environmental areas; air, radiation, and industrial hygiene; environmental engineering; occupational health nursing; epidemiology; occupational medicine.

North Carolina Public Health Academy

The Public Health Academy is NCIPH's partnership with NC Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) to broaden public health professional development opportunities and experiences through AHEC’s multi-site educational system. "Schools" for different public health professions will provide public health leaders and clinicians with access to knowledge and skills needed to deal with the rapidly changing public health environment by linking them to state-of-the-art learning methods. The first schools will be for health directors and  for medical residents. In the future, schools will be developed for public health nurses, environmental health specialists and social workers. The Academy was established by a grant from the Duke Endowment.

Southeast Public Health Training Center (SPHTC)

SPHTC is one of 14 regional centers established by Health Resources and Services Administration to "improve the Nation's public health systems by strengthening the core competencies and capabilities of the current and future public health workforce," particularly in under-served areas. The SPHTC places special emphasis on rural public health and public health nursing. It concentrates on increasing access to training resources already available.

Ask SPHERE (Southeast Public Health Educational Resources for Enhancement)

Ask SPHERE is an online clearinghouse of public health training materials and resources. Users can browse the Ask SPHERE database for training materials and also submit their own materials. The ever-growing Ask SPHERE database houses continually updated, valuable information such as short courses, case studies, slides, multimedia course modules, curricula, and instructional materials.

Workforce development

The NC Center for Public Health Preparedness offers many resources and tools for public health agencies seeking to improve the skills and abilities of their workforce. These products were developed for North Carolina public health departments, but can be customized upon request for any agency.
