UNC School of Public Health - Strengthening the public health workforce

As a link to academia, it is natural that one of the major roles of the NC Institute for Public Health is education. In fact, the Institute evolved from one of the largest and oldest continuing education programs among schools of public health.

Today the Office of Continuing Education trains more than 10,000 health professionals each year in North Carolina. Add in those who study for certificates administered by NCIPH, online participants of the NC Center for Public Health Preparedness courses, scholars of the multiple executive education academies and institutes, and those trained by the NC Occupational Safety and Health Education and Research Center, and that number nearly doubles. If this trend continues, the Institute will train 200,000 health professionals over the next ten years.

Several factors affect the Institute's training programs. Baby boomers retiring, new technology, reduction of travel funds, emphasis on performance improvement, and new targets for leadership enhancement all shape the future of public health education and training.

The Institute and its partners work to determine what educational opportunities are needed to assure a skilled, knowledgeable, and effective public health workforce.
