Student Life

Most of our MPH and certificate students are public health practitioners who are combining their education with busy professional lives. The asynchronous nature of our distance classes makes that combination possible, and allows students interaction with others from different disciplines and experiences. Twice during their tenure we bring these students together in Chapel Hill for leadership workshops and a day of outdoor team-building and self-discovery.

The rest of our students are enrolled in the Health Care and Prevention concentration, designed for current medical students who wish to complete the MPH requirements in a single year. In all concentrations, the hallmark is collaborative learning, as it involves so many skills of necessity to leaders.

Faculty Life

Our core faculty is small, since the program is interdisciplinary and a number of courses are offered through other departments of the School of Public Health (e.g. Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Health Policy & Administration, etc.). Our faculty members spend their days administering course work, monitoring discussion postings, providing feedback on assignments and advising students—in short, being as available to the students as possible. Like our students, faculty are experienced public health practitioners, and they are active in off-campus activities, such as recent service and data-gathering trips to regions in Mississippi devastated by Hurricane Katrina.

Staff Life

Our staff is largely housed on the fourth floor of the School of Public Health's McGavran-Greenberg Hall. The staff works hard to facilitate the workings of both distance and residential programs, provide support to faculty, and disseminate information and resources to students, particularly those distance students without direct access to on-campus offerings.

Alumni Life

Our alumni are taking leadership positions in public health across the state and across the country. As the number of alumni increases, our Alumni Association has grown and works to maintain ties to our graduates, making them aware of opportunities to continue their learning and to connect them with current students who share their interests. As the number of students in our courses continues to increase, some alumni are also beginning to work with the program as TA's and adjunct faculty.
