    Application procedures

Step 1: Decide Which Degree Is For You

Step 2: Review Application Deadlines

  • UNC Graduate School Deadline - Submit materials by January 1 for full consideration of financial assistance by the Graduate School  
  • PHLP Deadlines - Fall admission: April 1; Spring admission: Oct. 1
  • Decision Dates - The Graduate School will mail the official decision letter no later than April 1.
  • Terms For Which Applications Are Accepted - Applications are accepted for the fall, spring, and summer terms.
  • Financial Aid Information - Applications with all required materials received by January 1 will receive full consideration for Graduate School fellowships. Applications received after that date will be considered as funds remain available.  For more information on financial aid, please refer to the Office of Scholarships and Student Aid.

Step 3: Review Admission Requirements and collect Application Materials

Step 4: Review Special Instructions - Please contact Sue Robeson at 919-966-5305 if you have problems with the online application.

Step 5: Complete An Application - Applications are processed centrally through the UNC Graduate School.  The application is available ONLINE.  Create an account to begin the process. Once the fee is paid, the application is processed and the profile is available to PHLP the next business day.

Step 6:  Manage Your Application - You may track the progress of your application, verify the receipt of your application materials and view the Department's admissions decision ONLINE.
 

    Admission requirements

In addition to the general University admissions requirements, MPH program admissions requirements include:

  • Submission of completed application materials by April 1
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Relevant work experience (minimum of 3 years-5 years preferred)
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0
  • Personal statement/Statement of professional goals
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • Official transcripts for all completed coursework and each degree received
  • GRE or equivalent entrance exam scores taken within five years of application (may not be required for applicants with a doctoral degree)
  • TOEFL and completed financial certificate for international applicants

 

    Application materials

The Graduate School and the Department require you to submit the following items in order to complete your application.

Materials for the Graduate School - Mail the following items to the Graduate School, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Bynum Hall, CB# 4010, Chapel Hill, NC 27599-4010

  • Application Fee.  You may visit the Graduate School’s webpage for price changes or to see if you qualify for a fee waiver.
  • Transcripts - Mail one official transcript from each institution where you studied after high school bearing the signature of the registrar and the seal of the institution.
  • An official transcript from each institution is always required.
  • A transcript is needed even if credits earned at one institution appear on another institution's transcript as credits transferred.
  • International applicants must also submit a certified English translation of transcripts not issued in English.
  • Test Scores

Send recent GRE (past 5 years) or TOEFL (past 2 years) scores from the Educational Testing Services website to the Graduate School (UNC Code 5816).

MCAT scores are acceptable in place of GRE scores for the Health Care and Prevention concentration.

Individuals who hold a professional degree (law, medicine, dentistry) or a doctoral degree from a school in the United States will be exempted from thestandardized score requirements at a program's request. This exemption will be approved only for individuals who already hold the degree, not those pursuing the degree (as per the Graduate School's Guide to Graduate Admissions).
  • Financial Aid Form - To qualify for some forms of financial aid, complete your FAFSA online.
  • Supplemental Materials/Other Requirements - Applicants claiming NC residency for tuition purposes: North Carolina Residency Application.

Materials for the Department - Mail the following items to the Registrar, Public Health Leadership Programs, School of Public Health, CB# 7469, The University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, NC  27599-7469:

  • Transcripts - Mail one official transcript from each institution where you studied after high school bearing the signature of the registrar and the seal of the institution.
  • An official transcript from each institution is always required.
  • A transcript is needed even if credits earned at one institution appear on another institution’s transcript as credits transferred.
  • International applicants must also submit a certified English translation of transcripts not issued in English.
  • Three (3) letters of recommendations, at least one must be an academic reference.
  • CV/Résumé
  • Financial Certificate (international students only) showing sufficient financial resources to cover educational and living expenses for the duration of your program. Visit the Graduate School  webpage for more information.
  • Personal Statement
  • Supplemental Materials/Other Requirements
  • For OHN program, RN Licensure and Liability info form (include copy of insurance and copy of license).
