| Mayer-Davis named vice president of American Diabetes Association |

 Dr. Elizabeth Mayer-Davis Elizabeth J. Mayer-Davis, PhD, has been named vice president of health care and
education for the American Diabetes Association (ADA), the organization has
announced. Mayer-Davis is a professor of
nutrition in the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's Gillings School
of Global Public Health and the UNC School of Medicine.
Mayer-Davis' research has focused on
diabetes in youth, diabetes prevention and management, and diabetes among
African Americans and other minority and underserved populations. She is currently chairperson of the SEARCH for
Diabetes in Youth Study, a multi-center study funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National
Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, and is principal
investigator for the SEARCH Carolina Site, as well as serving as investigator
on several other diabetes studies.
Her service with the Association includes numerous national appointments,
including a term on the board of directors.
She currently serves on the publications policy committee, the
cardiometabolic risk initiative subcommittee and the health care reform task force.
Mayer-Davis earned a doctorate in epidemiology from the University of
California, Berkeley, and a Master of Science in Public Health from the
University of Colorado School of Medicine.
Diabetes is a serious disease that affects the body's ability to produce or
respond properly to insulin, a hormone that allows blood glucose to enter the
cells of the body and be used for energy. It is increasing at an alarming rate,
with nearly 24 million children and adults living with the disease and another
57 million Americans at risk for developing it.
The ADA is the leading nonprofit health
organization dedicated to preventing and curing diabetes and to improving the
lives of those currently living with the disease.
