Andrea C. Weathers, MD, DrPH, assistant professor of maternal and child health in the UNC School of Public Health, has accepted an invitation to serve a four-year term on the National Advisory Council on Migrant Health.  The invitation was extended by U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services, Michael Leavitt.

The 15-member council advises the Secretary on policies to increase the effectiveness of migrant health centers in delivering primary health care to migrant and seasonal farmworkers.

Council members also make specific recommendations on matters that affect the health of farmworkers and their families, including occupational safety, housing conditions, medical and social services, and domestic and family violence services.

"As the granddaughter of migrant farmworkers, I am humbled at this invitation to serve," Weathers said. "I am delighted to have this opportunity to add my voice to the voices of others who are working to improve the health and well-being of farmworkers and their families."
