Featured Announcement: NC TraCS announces next round of Pilot Grants program

Summary: The North Carolina Translational and Clinical Sciences Institute's (NC TraCS) Pilot Grant Program has $4.3 million available this year to support basic, clinical, and social scientists for bench-to-bedside and bedside-to-practice translational research. The goal is to promote development of novel solutions that will ultimately improve patient and community health outcomes for the citizens of North Carolina.

Summary: Susan G. Komen for the Cure, NC Triangle Affiliate4 (Komen NCT) announces funding for community health programs in 2010 - 2011.  Komen NCT funds will support programs that promote breast health and breast cancer education, screening, treatment support and post-diagnosis services for low-income, uninsured, underinsured and underserved women.

UNC NORC invites applications for Pilot & Feasibility research projects in Nutrition

DHHS announces ARRA grants for prevention and wellness programs

Deadline: Tuesday, Nov. 24

Summary: The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) will award $120 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funds to states and territories for prevention and wellness programs. The funding is part of the Communities Putting Prevention to Work initiative, which will make $650 million available to states and territories for public health efforts to address obesity, increase physical activity, improve nutrition and decrease smoking.

Biology of estrogen-receptor negative breast cancer in various racial and ethnic groups

Summary:
The Epidemiology and Genetics Research Program (EGRP) announces a new funding opportunity to promote the systematic study of the biology of ER-negative (ER -) human breast cancers, the characterization of their molecular features, and the signaling pathways and networks that support their growth, as well as to identify differences in the biology of ER-negative breast tumors among racial and ethnic groups.  This funding opportunity solicits applications from collaborative teams of interdisciplinary investigators focused on characterizing the biologic drivers, including genetic, epigenetic, molecular, and cellular factors, of ER-negative human breast cancer development and progression.

NIH announces Roadmap Transformative Research Projects Program

Summary: As part of the NIH Roadmap for Biomedical Research, the National Institutes of Health invites transformative Research Project Grant (R01) applications from institutions/organizations proposing groundbreaking, exceptionally innovative, high risk, original and/or unconventional research with the potential to create new scientific paradigms or challenge existing ones. NIEHS and NCI seek applications to establish a Breast Cancer and the Environment Research Program Coordinating Center

Deadline: Wednesday, Dec. 30

Summary: The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcements (FOA) issued by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) and the National Cancer Institute (NCI) is to solicit cooperative agreement grant applications from institutions to conduct coordinating functions for the Breast Cancer and the Environment Research Program (BCERP). The main focus of the Coordinating Center will be to: act as a central repository and clearinghouse for cross-site data from an ongoing study of environmental influences in puberty in young girls; organize annual meetings and regular conference calls for the Steering Committee and its subcommittees, the BCERP supported investigators, and the public; facilitate the BCERP Steering Committee and the Breast Cancer and the Environment Working Group (BCE WG); and provide progress reports and updates as requested by NIH staff.

NIDA and NCI announces new R01 grant: Accelerating the Pace of Drug Abuse Research Using Existing Epidemiology, Prevention, and Treatment Research Data

Deadline: Friday, Feb. 5

Summary: The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) and the National Cancer Institute (NCI) invite applications to support the innovative analysis of existing social science and behavioral data to study the etiology and epidemiology of drug using behaviors (defined as alcohol, tobacco and other drug), HIV risk behaviors, related disorders, prevention and treatment of these behaviors and health service utilization including quality, access and costs.

NCI seeks applications to Application and Early Stage Development of Emerging Technologies in Cancer Research

Deadline: Tuesday, Feb. 23.

Summary: This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA), issued by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), National Institutes of Health (NIH), solicits grant applications that propose exploratory research projects on the initial application of emerging analytical technologies as laboratory or clinical tools. An "emerging technology" is defined as one that has passed the initial developmental stage, but has not yet been evaluated within the context of its intended use. Projects proposed in response to this FOA should have the potential to produce a major impact in a broad area of cancer-relevant research. If successful, these technologies would accelerate research in cancer biology, cancer treatment and diagnosis, cancer prevention, cancer control and epidemiology, and/or cancer health disparities. This FOA solicits R21 applications that have high potential impact and allows for an element of technical risk; preliminary data are not required.

DOD Announces Additional Funds Available through the Autism Research Program

Summary:  The Fiscal Year 2009 (FY09) Defense Appropriations Act provides $8 million to the Department of Defense Autism  Research Program (ARP) to support high-impact, innovative research to improve the lives of individuals with autism spectrum disorders now.  This program is administered by the U.S. Army Medical Research and Material Command through the Office of the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs. Detailed descriptions of each of the funding mechanisms, evaluation criteria, and submission requirements can be found in the FY09 ARP Program Announcements.

RWJF, Pew launch $7.2 million initiative to promote use of health impact assessments

Summary: The Health Impact Project call for proposals (CFP) is seeking applicants to undertake health impact assessment (HIA) demonstration projects. The goal of the CFP and subsequent HIAs is to demonstrate the effectiveness of HIAs and promote their incorporation into local, state, tribal, and federal decision-making.

The advisory selection committee will review full proposals on a monthly basis.

Summary: The Golden LEAF Foundation is interested in outreach project ideas developed and delivered by UNC-Chapel Hill investigators that focus on rural business assistance, rural health care, community asset-based economic development, tourism, community leadership development, program evaluation, professional economic development education, or K-12 education. Outreach project ideas in these areas are intended to lead to the systemic or long-term capacity building necessary to create competitive communities over time. Whenever possible, the projects should involve collaboration with regional universities and community colleges, and advance one or more of the UNC Tomorrow report recommendations.  Faculty and/or staff can submit project ideas at any time to GLFCollaborative@unc.edu.

Working on Women in Science (WOWS) Announces Productivity Maintenance Awards

Summary: The WOWS (Working on Women in Science) program through the UNC School of Medicine announces a pilot program for 2008-09. The goal of the Productivity Maintenance Award program is to assist a faculty member to maintain productivity or meet key professional goals or deadlines during periods of increased personal demand that coincide with critical career junctures or events.

To qualify for a PMA, a faculty member must be facing a new, and generally unexpected or complicated, personal demand on time that could negatively impact productivity or ability to pursue activities that are key to continued career advancement.
  Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis with funds becoming available starting June 1, 2008.

The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Conservation and the Environment Grant Program

Summary:  The Andrew Mellon Foundation seeks applications to its Conservation and the Environment grant program for junior faculty.  Junior Faculty Research grants are awarded to new faculty as they begin their first tenure-track positions.  The idea is to provide intellectual venture capital to promising researchers at the critical and formative stage when they begin their independent research careers.  This program is devoted to basic research on how natural ecosystems work.  It emphasizes support of leading institutions, innovative research, and the training of promising doctoral and postdoctoral researchers.  The proposed research must be in the field of plant ecosystem ecology--here we include soils ecology, and plant and ecosystem processes.  The project or projects must be field research, and not to support analysis, modeling, correlations or surveys using extant data sets.
