Understanding Race in Health
Kaufman2 In recent history, doctors and
researchers have made numerous assertions concerning the use of race or
ethnicity as a factor that can influence susceptibility to disease,
prognosis, or response to therapy. However, a careful analysis of many of
these claims has not yet been made. Jay Kaufman, PhD is studying what
circumstances would call for race to be used as an informative variable.
In other projects, Dr. Kaufman is studying the roles of ethnicity and
socioeconomic conditions on pregnancy outcomes in the United States and in
Chile.
Kaufman3 With the analysis of census data and birth records, Dr. Kaufman is
conducting multi-level statistical analyses that take into account the
influence of ethnicity, socioeconomic status, nativity, and concentration of
ethnicity within Census Tracts. By clarifying the relationship between
ethnicity and pregnancy outcome more fully, considering a broader range of
ethnicities defined in greater detail, and integrating individual and
community level socioeconomic influences, Dr. Kaufman's team will be better
able to target groups in need of intervention, as well as identify clues to
the causes of such outcomes.
