Our more than 1,600 students represent a diverse mix of ages, nationalities and experience levels.
- More than 1,000
attend classes on campus.
- Another 600
study from home or work via distance-learning courses.
In addition to taking classes, many of our students
provide public health services and conduct research “in the field” – in communities
as close as Chapel Hill and Carrboro and as distant as Vietnam
and Malawi.
Around 80 percent of our students are
working toward a degree. In 2006-2007:
- 479 students are working toward a doctorate
- 725 students are working on a master’s degree
- 114 students are undergraduates
- 385 public
health practitioners are taking courses to earn a certificate.
Of our degree-seeking students, more than 70
percent are female, and about two-thirds are from North Carolina. In addition:
- 10 percent are
African American
- 17 percent are
Asian
- 3 percent are
Hispanic or Latino
- 66 percent are
Caucasian
- 4 percent
represent other ethnicities
Our students’ Graduate Record
Examination (GRE) scores average:
- 560 for the verbal
section
- 656 on the quantitative
section
- 622 for the analytical
section.
