As the top-rated public school of public health (U.S. News & World Report, 2003), Carolina offers in-depth academic programs that equip our graduates to tackle critical public health challenges in our state, nation and around the world.

  • The Department of Biostatistics is nationally recognized for its training, research, and consulting. Both faculty and students collaborate with other researchers within the university and national, international, governmental and private organizations.

  • The Department of Environmental Sciences & Engineering is one of the largest graduate programs of its kind in the country.  It is ranked among the nation’s top 10 programs in environmental engineering and environmental health by U.S. News & World Report (2006).

  • The Department of Epidemiology has one of the top research and education programs in the U.S. in the study of cancer, cardiovascular disease, infectious disease, reproductive health, environmental and occupational epidemiology, nutrition, health care, and injury.

  • The Department of Health Behavior and Health Education combines research, doctoral training, and one of the nation’s leading community health education programs for practitioners seeking master’s degrees. Research areas include adolescent health, cancer control, community-based interventions and evaluations, and health communication.

  • The Department of Health Policy and Administration is one of the largest and most respected departments of its kind nationwide. Areas of study include management, economics, policy analysis, operations research, political science, sociology, finance, accounting, organizational behavior and design, law, and ethics.

  • The Department of Maternal & Child Health is a prominent national and global center for research, teaching and service with strong collaborative ties with other university departments, and with local, state, national, and global maternal and child health agencies.

  • The Department of Nutrition consists of a dynamic and interdisciplinary faculty housed in both the School of Public Health and the School of Medicine. The department provides training in public health sciences with courses in physiological, biochemical and behavioral aspects of nutrition.

  • The Public Health Leadership Program is dedicated to educating and preparing current leaders in public health, medical care, and human services settings, with the skills necessary to serve as agents for creating and managing interdisciplinary efforts in community and population health improvements.
